reporter & illustrator

I’m Janelle Retka, an investigative reporter and editorial illustrator. I produce longform journalism and reported zines alike. My work focuses on science, education, and the carceral system.

I spent my early career reporting in Cambodia and the rural U.S. before putting down roots in New York City. My work has been recognized through an Edward R. Murrow investigative award, SPJ Sigma Delta Chi award for societal inequalities reporting, and SABEW award in climate journalism, among others.

I specialized in science reporting at Columbia Journalism School. You can spot my illustrations in The New Yorker, Latino USA, Prison Journalism Project, and elsewhere. I’m currently working as a research associate producer on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

I’m always down for a new project. Reach out directly for commissions and collaborations.
